About
My own experience
As a mother of two young teenagers and a new baby boy in 1989, I took part in the 12-week Parent-Link course in the UK in 1990 and found that my whole attitude to parenting changed for the better and everyone in the family benefited. As a result, the way I parented my first two children and my third child were totally different and the latter, my youngest son grew up as a young person with high self-esteem, confidence and an ability to express himself.
Fast forward to 2018 and, as I now work as a counsellor and psychotherapist on a one-to-one basis with clients, both face-to-face and online, many of the issues raised are to do with families and children. I am now even more aware than ever before that there is a real need for parents to acquire some of the skills which ensure their children value themselves.
This online programme is based on the information produced by The Parent Network and is reproduced with the kind permission of the late Ivan Sokolov, who sadly passed away eight years ago, and his wife Jacquie Sokolov Pearson.
While this parenting concept would not have been possible without the Sokolovs original input, I would like to dedicate Parenting Skills Online not only to them, but also to my Parent-Link trainer and dear friend, June Whiting, who set me on this path all those years ago. June used her immense natural skill, warmth and empathy to teach many parents how to help their children become young people with confidence and self-worth. I owe a lot to her.
Finally, I would like to thank my three children, Tony, Michelle and Ryan for teaching me so much. They have turned into wonderful caring adults (the two eldest with children of their own), despite the shortcomings of their mother!
